Can you charge an electric car with an extension cable? What you need to know

Electric vehicles such as the ARI 458, the ARI Bruni or the ARI Poly impress with their practicality in everyday use. A major advantage: they can be conveniently charged via a conventional household socket - ideal for use in the city, at work or in the countryside. But the question often arises:

Is charging with an extension cable allowed - and safe?

The short answer is: Yes, it is generally possible - but only under certain conditions. In this article, we explain what you should pay attention to if you want to charge your ARI electric vehicle with an extension cable.

1. the correct cable cross-section: at least 2.5 mm²

When charging an electric car, a comparatively high amount of current is transmitted over a long period of time. If the cable is too thin, it can heat up excessively, which in the worst case can lead to a fire. It is therefore essential to ensure a minimum cross-section of 2.5 mm².

The label on the cable sheath usually provides information about the cross-section. Anything below this size is not suitable for charging an electric car.

2. do not use a cable drum when it is rolled up

Many people use a cable reel for charging - but leave it fully or partially rolled up. This can be problematic: Coiled cables accumulate heat, which can lead to dangerous overheating under heavy loads.

Important: Always unroll the extension cable completely before you start charging

3. use weatherproof and tested cables

If you charge your ARI vehicle outdoors, the extension cable used should be suitable for outdoor use. Ensure that the protection class is at least IP44 and give preference to VDE-tested cables. This is the only way to ensure that moisture or dirt do not pose a risk.

Conclusion: Charging with an extension cable - possible, but with caution

Charging an ARI electric car using an extension cable is practical - provided certain safety aspects are observed:

  • Cross-section of the cable at least 2.5 mm²

  • Unwind the cable drum completely

  • Only use tested, weatherproof cables

If you observe these points, you can charge your electric vehicle safely, efficiently and conveniently via the household socket - whether at home or on company premises.
